Winter car care: Tips to keep your car running smoothly

Winter can be tough on your car. It’s important to take extra care of your car during the colder months. Car maintenance can help get your car through the cold period. Here are some of the top tips to keep your car running smoothly this winter:

Get your battery tested

Cold weather can damage your car’s battery. It’s best to get your car battery checked or tested by a professional before winter arrives. If your battery is old or weak, it may not make it through winter. You don’t want to be left stranded somewhere in the cold because the weather killed your battery.

Check your tyres

Your tyres need to be in good condition if you plan on driving in cold, wet weather. Ensure your tyres have good tread depth and are inflated correctly. If your tyres are looking smooth, you need to replace them. Smooth tyres don’t have enough grip to ensure safe driving on winter roads.

Replace your windscreen wipers

You can’t drive safely without good visibility in winter. Check your windscreen wipers are not worn or damaged. If the rubber on your wiper blades is dull or cracked, you’ll need to replace them.

Test your headlights

Testing your headlights is an important part of winter car care. Winter driving often means low visibility or misty conditions. It’s important to check your headlights are working to ensure good visibility. This will keep you, your passengers and other drivers safe. Be sure to replace any burnt-out bulbs or malfunctioning headlights.

Protect your car’s exterior

Winter weather can cause damage to your car. Always keep your car parked undercover in a garage or carport. It may also be worth investing in a car cover to protect your car from snow, hail or other debris.

Use a winter grade oil

Some parts of South Africa experience extremely cold weather, and even snow. Cold weather can cause some oil or coolant to thicken. This can reduce engine performance and damage your car. If you’re in a colder area, consider switching to a winter grade oil. This will ensure proper engine lubrication during the colder months.
