In 2024, car hijacking remains a major threat for South African drivers. If you’re looking to buy a new ride, you want to know which types of cars are more vulnerable to hijacking. Understanding which cars are targeted by criminals can help you make informed decisions.
Top most hijacked cars
Presented in the quarterly crime statistics for the second quarter 2023 (July 2023 to September 2023), the South African Police Service (SAPS) reported that 6,009 cars were hijacked.
Aligning with other sources, there appears to be a trend of hatchbacks and bakkies being hijacked. According to the report, sedans, hatchbacks, and coupes accounted for 2,841 of the vehicles hijacked, followed by bakkies and panel vans which accounted for 1,878 vehicles hijacked.
Sedans, hatchbacks, and coupes represented 47.3% of all the hijacked cars. Bakkies and panel vans represented 31.3% of all the hijacked cars. What’s even more concerning, is that the AA estimates that approximately 60-70% of cars on South African roads are uninsured.
Where are the hijacking hotspots?
Hijacking hotspots are areas with high incidences of hijackings. Car hijackings are a daily occurrence. They can happen any day, anywhere, and at any time. Here are some of the most common hijacking hotspots:
Your driveway
To your surprise, your own driveway tops the list of hijacking hotspots. Why? Your driveway is a predictable, easy space for criminals to strike. As you arrive home, your guard is often down. You wouldn’t expect to be hijacked in your own driveway. If possible, try to arrive and leave home at different times to keep your movements unpredictable. Always stay vigilant, as you never know who may be watching.
Outside your children’s school
Criminals are looking to target you when you drop off or pick up your children from school.
The last thing you would expect is to be hijacked doing the school run. Avoid hanging around before and after pick up or drop off time. If possible, park your car in a safe parking zone that is monitored by security.
Petrol stations
Petrol stations have also emerged as hijacking hotspots. When waiting for your car to be filled up with fuel, you become an easy target. When refuelling, keep your windows closed and keep your valuables out of sight.
Traffic lights or intersections
Criminals have become brave, hijacking vehicles even in broad daylight and amidst heavy traffic. Vigilance is essential while driving, especially when stationary at traffic lights or intersections. Always leave ample space between your car and others to facilitate a quick escape if necessary.
Tips to avoid hijackings
The vast majority of people in South Africa have either been victims of hijackings themselves, or know someone close to them who has. Here are some simple tips you can follow to reduce your chances of being hijacked:
Lock your doors
Before you adjust your seatbelt, aircon or radio, ensure your doors are locked.
Be aware of your surroundings
Always ensure that you are aware of your surroundings. Be wary of people who approach your car when you’re at a stop sign or traffic light.
Close your windows
Even a small gap can lead to trouble. Keep your windows closed when driving through areas where there is dense traffic.
Keep valuables out of sight
If you’re going to keep valuables or other personal belongings in your car, be sure to keep them hidden. If you keep your valuables hidden, you’ll be less likely to fall victim to a hijacking. Never keep your laptop on the seat next to you. Always store your valuables in your boot before travelling.
