How to care for your car during the lockdown

The lockdown period for a lot of us (unless you are part of the courageous essential workforce) means our cars will remain mostly, if not completely, unused. – NB if you are apart of the heroic essential workforce, you will be happy to know that you can take advantage of the now lowered fuel price!

And as many of us may have experienced in the past – having your car standstill for an extended period of time can have some costly consequences. So, here are some pointers on how to care for your car in this lockdown period;

1. THE BATTERY!

The number 1 risk you run during this time is running down your battery. To avoid this either start your car twice a week or, if your manufacturer recommends it, disconnect the battery altogether (Remember to check your vehicle handbook or if you’ve lost it go online and check with the manufacturer). Failing to do so could mean that when it comes time to get back to life as we know it – your car battery could be completely flat and might even need to be replaced.

2. Clean Your Car

Dirt left on your car can leave permanent damage through staining or scratching your car. Use this time to give your car a proper clean – inside and out! (Remember to use proper car cleaning soaps and cloths – using the wrong stuff could leave scratch marks and damage the paintwork). You can even get your kids involved in this activity?

3. Keep it covered

If possible, park your car undercover. This will help in keeping it clean and out of harm’s way should we experience any bad weather.

4. Keep it covered (again)

Do not cancel your car insurance during the lockdown, as tempting as it may be to save the cash – canceling would only mean that should anything happen; you would not be covered and be in for a costly bill (trees falling on cars, hail, fire, and theft are still real perils whilst the car is standing). Plus you will lose out on any no claims bonus you may have.
